Mesothelioma Cancer
Mesothelioma is a very rare form of lung cancer that attacks the mesothelium. The mesothelium is made up of membranes which are thin layers of tissue that surround the organs and body cavities like the lungs or abdomen. The visceral membrane closly surrounds the organs and the parietal membrane is like a sac that covers the visceral membrane.

It is both the visceral and parietal membranes that make up the mesothelium.This areas has fluid that helps organs move easily among surrounding structures. With the lungs it helps reduce friction between the lung and wall of the chest during breathing as the lung expands.

Malignant Mesothelioma
A type of mesothelioma can be referred to by many different names depending on what part of the body it is located in. When in the abdomen it is called the peritoneum. When in the lungs it's the pleura. And when in the heart area it's called the pericardium. Each corresponds to it's own area as in peritoneum mesothelioma (cancer of the abdomen/stomach), pleural mesothelioma (cancer of the lung lining), and pericardium mesothelioma(cancer of the heart).
